My Go-To Rules
Ever feel like you're running around like a headless chicken, constantly putting out fires and never quite getting ahead? Yeah, I've been there too. But over the years, I've picked up a few strategies that have helped me navigate this crazy thing called life with a bit more efficiency, thoughtfulness, and sanity. Consider this your cheat sheet to a smoother ride!
1. The 80/20 Principle: Work Smarter, Not Harder
This one's a classic, and for good reason. The 80/20 rule (also known as the Pareto Principle) basically states that 80% of your results come from 20% of your efforts. And this reverse is also true. The last 20% of results takes up 80% of the total effort. So, instead of spreading yourself thin, focus on identifying that crucial 20% and give it your all.
2. The 34% Rule: Explore, Then Exploit
This gem comes from the book "Algorithms to Live By" by Brian Christian and Tom Griffiths (a great read, by the way). It suggests that when faced with a decision with a time limit, you should spend 34% of that time exploring your options. Then, for the remaining time, exploit the best option you've found. It's a great way to balance exploration and exploitation, leading to more informed and efficient choices.
3. The 5-Minute Rule: Just Do It!
Procrastination is the thief of time, right? So, if you've got a task that takes less than 5 minutes to complete, just do it! Don't let it linger on your to-do list and clutter your mind. This simple rule has helped me conquer countless small tasks and free up mental space for the bigger stuff.
4. Wait and See: Don't Get Caught Up in the Noise
Life is messy, and things aren't always what they seem. Before jumping to conclusions or reacting impulsively, take a step back and wait. Give situations time to unfold, gather more information, and see the bigger picture. This approach, inspired by the book "Thinking in Systems" by Donella Meadows, has saved me from countless rash decisions and unnecessary stress.
5. Be Proactive: Hope for the Best, Prepare for the Worst
This one's all about taking control. Similar to Murphy's Law, but it has an supportive twirl to it, allowing yourself to not feel entirely pessimistic about life. Take initiative and plan things out. Anticipate challenges, identify potential risks, and develop plans to mitigate them. This doesn't mean being cynical, but rather being prepared. It's about facing the future with confidence and resilience.
6. Try to keep the number of choices 3 or less
Hailing from Hick's Law, the more choices you have, the time it takes to decide on it increases logarithmically. Especially in large groups, this rule is invaluable to use. This rule has helped mitigate many arguments and time-sensitive situations I have been through at work and at-home!
7. Balance Self-Care with Consideration for Others
Putting yourself first is crucial. You can't pour from an empty cup, right? But don't let self-care turn into selfishness. Remember, we're all interconnected. Be mindful of the impact your actions have on others, and strive to create a world where everyone can thrive.
These are just a few of the guiding principles that have helped me navigate life's twists and turns. What are your go-to strategies? Share your wisdom in the comments below!
